Russians do not believe in unions. 68% low-evaluate the role of trade unions - VCIOM

According to a recent survey of the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VTsIOM), a significant proportion of Russians (68%) of low value on the role of trade unions in protecting workers’ rights in our country. A similar survey was conducted in 1989. Then the low role of these organizations say 52% of respondents. The survey covered 1.6 thousand. People in 132 settlements of 46 regions of Russia.

About low role of trade unions are much more likely say residents of large cities (80%), respondents aged 45-59 years (74%), as well as supporters of non-parliamentary parties (81%). Almost twice reduced the number of those who notes the high importance of these organizations - 12% versus 23% in 1989.

42% of respondents noted a marked weakening of the importance of trade unions in the last 3-5 years (compared to 7% in 1989). Only 5% of respondents said the increased role of these organizations (as against 29% in 1989). One in three (30%) believes that the role of trade unions remained at the same level. In 1989 he talked about it twice as likely (62%).

Pessimistic about trade unions often say residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg (52%), Russians aged 45-59 (48%), with higher education (44%).

VTsIOM director general Valery Fyodorov explains the reduction of confidence in the trade unions changing the very concept of these organizations.

- Previously, they had a clear understandable niche - provide workers with vouchers to resorts, reorganize, to educate, to follow the safety precautions at the enterprises, etc. The way these organizations has developed over decades, so all understand why you need to go to the trade union. And in the new capitalist reality, the unions have not found their place. In the West, they are engaged in the protection of workers’ interests. Our unions in the majority do not, since disappeared system in which they had previously been a kind of division of administration of the company - said Valery Fedorov.

According to him, the shop steward in a sense, served as the Deputy Director of the Human Resources and was not representative of the workers themselves, who organize something and perhaps see in the administration of the enemy, partner or competitor, but in any case separates itself from the administration. Of course, to protect the interests of workers in the format of the old trade unions was unreal, it was necessary to eliminate them from scratch to create new ones. But this did not happen, the authorities did not want to shake the social stability.

So why workers throughout Russia disappointed in the unions and who will protect their rights? Back in 1987, Mikhail Gorbachev heads of trade union committees shamed for what they “polka-dancing butterfly in front of directors,” and do not protect the interests of workers.
